Fogo: Education Minister Advocates for Restrictions on Cell Phone Use in Schools Through Ninth Grade
Education Minister Arnaldo Brito today advocated maintaining the ban on cell phone use through the ninth grade, arguing that early and excessive exposure to screens can harm children’s development.
According to Arnaldo Brito, there are studies that point to the negative effects of excessive screen time, arguing that, at least until the age of 16, the use of these devices should be properly monitored.
“Thinking is fundamental to the development of our brains,” stated the minister, arguing that the convenience provided by cell phones, calculators, and other technologies can lead young people to rely on these devices instead of developing the reasoning skills needed to find solutions.
Arnaldo Brito clarified, however, that he is not against cell phone use after a certain age, provided it is done in a controlled manner, acknowledging the usefulness of these devices.
“I recognize that, at a very young age, this can be harmful,” he stated, adding that the government will maintain the current ban on cell phone use through the ninth grade and continue to reflect on the matter.
The minister also noted that the issue should be the subject of a national debate, as part of the public discussion he intends to promote regarding the educational system and the challenges facing education in Cape Verde.
